El Golfo Lanzarote: the black village where volcano meets the ocean

In the southwest of Lanzarote, far from the busiest tourist resorts, lies a small fishing village that captivates anyone who loves authentic landscapes, wild nature, and spectacular sunsets. EL GOLFO is one of the island’s most striking destinations: a place where volcanic power meets the Atlantic Ocean, creating almost surreal scenery.

A village between lava and ocean

EL GOLFO Lanzarote is known for its whitewashed houses facing the sea and its peaceful, traditional Canarian atmosphere. Walking along the small promenade, you can smell freshly cooked fish in the local restaurants while Atlantic waves crash against the black volcanic rocks.

The village lies within a volcanic natural park and is surrounded by landscapes shaped by eruptions that have transformed Lanzarote over the centuries. Here, the dominant color is the deep black of lava, contrasted with the blue ocean and the white houses.

Charco Verde: Lanzarote’s most famous lagoon

The main attraction of El Golfo Lanzarote is the famous green lake, known as Charco de los Clicos. This emerald-green lagoon sits inside a partially collapsed volcanic crater open to the sea. (Read the blog post about Charco Verde, click here)

Black beaches of El Golfo Lanzarote

The beaches in the area are not the typical tropical sandy shores. Here, nature is wilder and more dramatic. The main beach is made of black volcanic sand and exposed to strong Atlantic waves, making it ideal for those who enjoy photographing raw, untouched landscapes.

Due to strong currents and rough seas, swimming is not always recommended, but the true charm of the area lies in its rugged and authentic beauty.

Hiking and walks in the surroundings

For hiking and volcanic nature lovers, El Golfo is also an excellent starting point to explore the landscapes of the Parque Nacional de Timanfaya and its surroundings.

It is important to note that access to the inner trails of the park is very limited for conservation reasons, but the surrounding areas offer several spectacular walking routes through solidified lava, craters, and basaltic flows.

Some of the most interesting walks include the coastal paths connecting El Golfo to places like Los Hervideros and the Janubio salt flats, where the scenery constantly shifts between black cliffs, crashing waves, and volcanic plains. These are relatively easy routes but visually stunning, perfect for experiencing Lanzarote’s wild soul.

Where to eat: fresh fish and Canarian cuisine

EL GOLFO is considered one of the best places in Lanzarote to eat fresh fish.

The many little seaside restaurants offer local specialties such as:

  • grilled squid

  • Canarian octopus

  • seafood paella

  • papas arrugadas with mojo sauce

  • fresh Atlantic tuna

Many restaurants feature terraces overlooking the ocean, perfect for enjoying dinner while watching the sunset.

How to get there

El Golfo is about a 23-minute drive from Casa Mialma Lanzarote, and is easily reached by car. You can drive to Tias and take the fast route, but our advice is different.

From the Casa Mialma parking lot, drive towards La Geria and continue towards Uga and Yaiza: you'll reach EL GOLFO along an amazing road immersed in wild nature, among vineyards and incredible volcanic landscapes.

Many visitors include the village in a tour that also covers:

  • Parque Nacional de Timanfaya

  • the Janubio salt flats

  • the western volcanic coastline

Thanks to the mild Canarian climate, El Golfo can be visited year-round. However: spring and autumn offer ideal temperatures and fewer tourists, summer is perfect for long sunny days exploring Lanzarote, winter remains pleasantly warm, often above 20°C.

The best time of day is late afternoon, when the sun sets over the Atlantic, creating breathtaking colors.
