Charco Verde: Lanzarote’s Enchanting Green Lagoon

Tucked away on the dramatic west coast of Lanzarote, near the quaint fishing village of El Golfo, lies one of the island's most striking natural wonders — Charco Verde Lanzarote also known as El Lago Verde or the Green Lagoon. This surreal, emerald-colored lake sits inside the half-collapsed crater of a volcano, creating an unforgettable contrast with the black volcanic sand and deep blue Atlantic Ocean nearby.

What Makes Charco Verde Lanzarote Green?

The lagoon’s vivid green color comes from algae that thrive in the salty waters, combined with minerals from the surrounding volcanic rocks. The intense hue seems almost unnatural, especially under the bright Canarian sun — but it’s 100% real, and completely mesmerizing.

A Landscape of Contrasts

Charco Verde is a photographer’s dream. On one side, the bright green lake; on the other, the red and black cliffs of the old volcano; and just steps away, the roaring ocean and a beach covered in black volcanic sand. It’s the kind of place that feels more like a movie set or another planet than a beachside location in Europe.

Can You Swim There?

No, swimming in Charco Verde is not allowed, as it’s a protected natural site. However, just a short walk away, you’ll find areas where you can enjoy the sea views or relax on the beach (although the currents can be strong — always use caution).

Lanzarote Visitors Experience

Charco Verde is located just outside El Golfo, a small, charming village known for its seafood restaurants. It’s an easy drive from most parts of Lanzarote, and there’s a car park close to the viewing area. From there, it’s a short walk to the viewpoint overlooking the lagoon.

The Charco Verde is 21 minutes by car from Casa MIALMA Lanzarote.

When to visit

Sunset is a magical time to visit Charco Verde, as the golden light adds even more drama to the colorful landscape. Mornings are quieter and better for peaceful photos or a relaxing stroll before heading into El Golfo for lunch.

Tips for Visitors

  • Wear comfortable shoes: The trail is short but can be uneven.

  • Bring your camera or phone: You’ll want photos!

  • Don’t litter or walk too close to the edge of the lagoon — help protect this unique environment.

  • Combine your visit with a meal in El Golfo — the grilled fish here is a local favorite.

Charco Verde is a perfect example of Lanzarote’s wild beauty — volcanic, vibrant, and unforgettable. Whether you're into photography, geology, or just love seeing nature at its most bizarre and beautiful, it’s a must-see stop on your island adventure.
